ANOTHER GALAPAGOS BEAUTY!

Why the l-o-n-g face?

Isnt she gorgeous???

This is another one of the special animals at the Galapagos Islands...which, as you notice, we~re enthralled with!!!!! (more pics to come too!) You should see the crabs..and the seal lions..and the sea turtles..and, and and....

There were two of these two, oh do special, pelicans..Pelly and her mate Percy! :-)

These two pelicans were perched in a tree, right next to where we were sunbathing! Just there..WATCHING US!!!! With their l-o-n-g smiling faces...hehe

Just so GORGEOUS!!! And comical at the same time!

THE OTHER MUST! SOCCER in BRASIL!

Day 282

Rio, Brasil

*************************
HOT HOT HOT again today!!!!! 35C and HIGH humidity!
*************************

The other MUST in Brasil is to go to a soccer game. Or football as they call it! Football, we~ve noticed is what every little kid is playing in the street, what every big kid is playing in the park, or every man is watching on TV!

Brasil is SOCCER MAD!

So of course we had to go to a soccer game!

This is another place where it is best to go with a local! So. We went with a carioca and about 10 others to Havelange Soccer Stadium!

This stadium which is on Rio's working class north side..was opened on July 13th for the pan american games..and it~s an amazing stadium.

Rio~s most famous stadium is the Maracana stadium which is where the likes of famous soccer hero Ronaldo played! It~s closed at the moment, undergoing an overhaul, which is why they built the Joao Havelange Stadium.

The stadium took about 30 minutes to get there from our hostel..and it wasn~t crowded. Probably about quarter full, but it~s a massive stadium! Holds 45,000 people! There were heaps of guards and guard dogs around tho!

We were to watch the Brasilian Under 23 team play the best of the Brasilian League teams. They are called ~friendly matches~. We were told to keep our eyes out for a young player, Alex, 17 years old when he got signed up....#11, who has just been signed a 30 million dollar deal to play league football.

Of course we all concentrated on watching this kid on the field..and he didn~t disapoint! He came out as #10 for the Under 23 Brasilian side where he is playing until Jan 2008 as he will be 18 then!

I dont know absoultely anything about soccer..but i knew his FOOTWORK was a work of genius! He shone. And we felt privileged to be watching him. We~ll be keeping an eye out for him next season if we ever see Brazil play..and we can know we saw him for real in Brasil..cool hey...gosh, the groupy side of my personality has come out again! haha!

Even the photographers were all over him....filmng and taking photos!! And as soon as they took the pics..they were uploading them to their laptops! I think he~s the next Ronaldo!

You should have heard the crowd. It wasn~t league football..and yet there were going wild..singing their songs..yelling..carrying on!

That was my FIRST soccer game..and like my first trek (machu picchu) I think i was inauguated at the world~s best arena!!!!

To celebrate this momentous occasion i bought a sweat bandana with RIO de JANEIRO, BRASIL on it!!!!

More to carry...

While we were waiting for the bus, near the stadium we saw more shanty houses....two in a small park...two hovels made of tin and blue plastic..places people call home. One even had a fridge..which of course didn~t work but was there, next to the ramshackle shanty home.

And on the way home...in the Favela...we passed more shanty towns...homes that were even worse than those behind the stadium. Row upon row of houses joined together by tin and cardboard...and then the housing estates closeby...that had houses that were mouldy and old....

It really makes a person think doesn~t it. When a country can give a rising star a 30million dollar football contract..and yet, have their people living in slums....

Once we got through the tunnel to the city of Rio....the xmas tree in the pond was there..floating..in all it~s element...

And that, reflected how unequal the world is as well...there were those admiring the view and eating icecreams and drinking tuarania antarctica (local rio drink!) on this very hot, sticky and humid day..and there were kids juggling tennis balls at the oncoming traffic waiting at lights to try and beg a donation.

There was a guy being accosted by police...and ritzy hotels looming over crowded streets.

I guess it all depends on which side of the tunnel a person in rio is born on.

CARNAVAL IN RIO!

Day 281

Rio de Janeiro Brasil.

We heard the Carnaval in Rio is a MUST!

But it~s a must, ONLY if you have a guide or a carioca (local) with you! We heard everywhere...DO NOT GO OUT IN RIO AT NIGHT!!!!!! The crime here is pretty high...

BUT! We really wanted to go...

The Carnaval is held in February but we knew there were rehearsals going on..our dilemma...Should we just go by ourselves..?

THEN...

There was a notice on the notice board that we enquired about.

There was the opportunity to go to a Carnaval REHEARSAl and we said YES!!! ABSOLUTELY we would go!

It started at midnight and finished at 6am and was as close to the real thing as you could get. The Samba schools here in Rio put these events on for the carioca~s (locals) as well as for the gringo~s (Ss! the tourists!) and they start about 3 months before the event!

Carnaval is is a wild event. It~s like a massive mardi gras. And in fact the mardi gras around the world are based on the Carnavals in South America.

And it~s celebrated every year throughout Brazil. It~s held on the four days before Ash Wednesday which precedes the forty days of Lent. And we were told the word means carne = meat and vale = goodbye and because the carnaval is the end of lent, it is the end of eating no meat! And the whole country, being catholic, abstain from meat during lent..so imagine how exciting it is to celebrate the Carnaval...and be able to eat meat, dance, sing and just go mad!!

Apparently there is a lot of riavlry thoughtout Brasil, as to who has the best ^Carnaval^...with Salvadore coming to Rio just before the event to say there~s is better! It~s funny to hear the local~s talk about Carnaval.

Here in Rio it~s a huge spectacle! And the Samba schools are very proud of their rehearsals..and advertise widely for people to go along and watch the colour, the costumes, the singing, the dancing...and just to be in the excitement!

And we heard that the whole country just STOPS STILL for the whole time it~s on...and the next one is on the 1st to the 4th Feb! We~ll watch it on tv knowing what they~re talking about now!!!

Anyway..about the rehearsals...

At first we didn~t know if we were actually going to be going or not..because we had our names up to go...but we were the only one~s with our names up on the board (at the hostel). The guy, Leon, at the hostel said don~t worry, people will decide whether they will go after they come back from the clubs.

Greg checked with him about 10pm when we got back from dinner (went back to the R22Frango place!) and we were still the only one~s there...so Leon started rounding people up. At 11pm we checked again with him..and he said the guide, or the carioca would go with four people...and we told him we were really KEEN to go!!! (the next one was on the following Sat night and we wouldn~t be there!) He said...he~d try rounding up more people!

We checked with him again at 11.30pm and he gave us the thumbs up. We were set to go! Yay. We were off to Carnaval. Or at least that~s what it felt like. And it felt exciting to be going out in Rio..at midnight!!!

At midnight...we met downstairs...and 8 of us loaded into the bus! Amazing how people come out of the woodwork. We were thinking the price may have put some of the young one~s off because it was R40 each. But we thought that was a small price to pay for one of Rio~s hightlights!

As we drove through Rio we noticed it was electic...the place was so alive. People and colours everwhere. It really is the party city. We were going to join them....

The black girl that came with the carioca was just gorgeous...she was the girlfriend of one of the guys who works for the hostel and she said that the Carnaval music was SOUL music to her. She also brought a friend of hers from university who also loved the music and knew all the songs. She ended up doing the english translation for us..because her english was so good.

We sped through the city of Rio... the driver had no sense of red lights or speed...we just hung on like mad and hoped we made it to our destination! No seat belts in the van either!

And we passed the lagoon where there was a massive floating Christmas tree! It was lit up and looked quite spectacular..it really is starting to feel like Christmas has decended on us here in Rio with all the trees and lights!

We passed through the tunnel to the Rochina Favela, the largest shantytown in Rio. It~s so weird, because once you go through the tunnel....and to the other side where the Favela is the city becomes very slum like and poor. There were market stalls on the streets and people everywhere..kids playing a soccer game at one of the parks..and of course looming above was Christ the Redeemer..the massive 38 metre statue! It was 12.30am!

We arrived at Rochina Samba Dance School just after this..about 12.45am..and the car park was packed. Behind the carpark was a huge shed and this is where the rehearsals took place. We were all guided in there by our guide, the guy from the hostel and his girlfriend...with the driver staying behind.

And the music and dancing had already started.

It was quite magical...there were butterflies everywhere. This is their logo and all the guys were wearing colourful shirts with butterflies and loud colours..advertising the Carnaval event in 2008. Greg and i bought a shirt each! We got caught up in the moment. We can wear them at the Mardi Gras in Perth.....i can~t imagine where else Greg will wear his without gettng hit on! hehe

We left ourselves with a grand total of 3 Reais and wondered if we could buy agua with this!! (water!) We didn~t want to drink any alcohol because we knew we were there until 6am!

There was a main guy singing and a girl and a guy dancing..and the whole shed was rocking with black soul music...everyone dancing..or shimmering really. They were literally wobbling their tuat large butts off!

The costumes were amazing...they came out around 2am.

And then about 3am the drummers started drumming which deafened us! It was SO loud and everyone seemed to be getting into a frenzy! The music, the dancing..the whole atmosphere was just zany, wild and colourful!

Two of the girls that came with us caught a taxi home when this started..they couldnt handle the noise! And even though we found it loud...every hour something new appeared...like just after that there was a very beautiful girl, their butterfly mascot, that appeared on stage (and enthralled all the men!)...so we decided we would stay till the end!

When this girl came out...even the photographer got excited!!! And most shots we got of her..were with him in it! But i thought that was a good photo in itself! ha!

There were a lot of different acts..and another band came out...with all sorts of different instruments....drums that squeaked and rattles and wooden stringed instruments. I was thinking Shameem would be in heaven!

I also thought..no wonder the likes of Peter Allen and Paul Simon loved South America and were so influenced by the rhythms and sound here..it is so alluring and catchy and puts everyone who listens and watches into an amazing space. It was also late..and people were drinking..and dancing..and singing along.

We took some great photos!

Here are the two carioca~s we went with!!!

It seemed to me to be very much a male domain. Mostly men in the audience just watching. And the women that were there were dancing. But on stage, it was mostly women! There were gays singing and dancing with no one battering an eyelid. People were dressed in wild colours and no one battered an eyelid. People were just enjoying the music!

There was a reverance when people were playing or singing...no one talked. That~s one thing i did notice. And at one point a guy in the band took his fingers to his lips and ushered a shhh to a member of the audience! (Ok, it was Greg!!) All he did was ask me, ~what~because i wanted him to take a pic of the drummer!!! (who had a huge cheesy mesmerised smile on his dial!)

It was an event worth going to!

We ended up leaving about 4am..and got home at 4.30am...

And after we got to bed, we couldn~t sleep..it was such a celebration of a culture that really entered our being.

And that was our experience of Carnaval!

In one word,

STILL SINGING IN THE RAIN! I GO TO RIO...

Day 280

Rio de Janeiro, Brasil (Brazil to us), South America

It~s so hot here! 34C but HIGH humidity! It~s hot, yet it~s raining!!!!

We wanna go to the beach......

On the way here from the airport, that was one of the fist things we saw! A sign saying COCOCABANA! Imagine....right there, Cococabana....THE famous beach!

It still surprises me that here we are..in Rio. In South America.

In fact, it still surprises me that we~re still travelling around the world..nine months later...it~s just the greatest thing, to be able to do this!

We didn~t go to the beach today tho...

We spent today catching up on the last week of long flights and lost sleep!

At breakfast this morning we met a few of the others who are here in the hostel...all friendly, we~re the mama and papa here but that~s ok...it~s like being in a family! And it really is..we have to wait for the other~s to finish their showers...as it~s a shared shower.

There are five showers and about 25 of us staying at the hostel! Weird too, ALL toilet paper has to go into the bin..NONE to go in the toilet. It~s been like this in most of the places in South America..which says something about their plumbing system doesn~t it....

And then after breakfast..we slept and read all day!!! Under the fan in our room..which is an essential (air con would be nice..but you pay a lot for that in Rio!). The heat is knocking us out! Even hotter than in the galapagos...which was more of a dry heat. Here it~s a humid and sticky heat! And we~re on malaria tabs..so we can~t be in the sun too much, apparently! (I beg to differ, but Greg insists - no sun!!!)

I finished one of the books i found in the hostel library called, My Antonia by Willa Carter which is a story about a pioneering woman of the Midwest America. Was good to escape in the story!

That~s one thing about hostels...there are usually heaps of books to read! I also found Under the Tuscan Sun which I~m reading now...we saw the movie in Perth last year. Make me want to spend a year in away! haha Just kidding..but maybe next time, we acutally will have the year away in the one spot rather than all over the place like we are now!

Can~t believe we~re thinking like that and we~re not even home after this year yet! We also want to come back to South America..there is no way we can see what we want to see on this leg of our trip...and there is SO much to see here. As you can tell, we~ve been meserised by this country..it~s so beautiful. So colourful. So friendly. SO FANTASTIC!!!!!

We also found a book in the library..all about Brasil..so we~ve been devouring that as well...

The name, Rio de Janeiro is Portuguese for "River of January"!

The naming of Rio dates back to the 1st January 1502 when Portuguese ships sailed past Sugar Loaf mountain into Guanabara Bay and they saw the fast current coming out of the bay was actually a river mouth....and that~s what they entered into their ship~s log books...^The River of January^....Rio de Janeiro in Portuguese.

Tonight we went to a different restaurant..Last night dinner..which was black beans as a first course, chicken, rice (aroz) and fritas (fries) and a beer each (local one called Brahms) cost us 22 Reais..

And tonight..it cost us double but we were in a more classier restaurant...it was indoors!!!! We ordered FRANGO because we knew frango in Portuguese was chicken....and this time it came with a sauce! (the sauce was a surprise) We really just get a portuguese phrase book! We HAVE to have something other than chicken sometime!!!!

We also found a supermarket in the same street...so we~re home and hosed. We have a supermarket and a self catering hostel, so...can cook if we want to, but the food is so cheap we~re not sure that we want to! We~re getting spoilt..no cooking....geepers!

Tomorrow..we do start exploring more..and will also look for a laundry!

Still singing...

When my baby
When my baby smiles at me
I go to Rio
De Janeiro
